The life of a medical resident can be exhausting, hard, and never ending. Even when he is not at work, Dr. Gerber is still working hard reading journal articles, catching up on patient notes, and preparing for presentations. Some rotations are easier than others, which gives him a little bit of a break from the other time consuming rotations.
Some of the rotations Dr. Gerber has been on the past few months are: Endocrinology, Family Medicine, Trauma Surgery and most recently Anesthesiology. Some of the activities involved in each of these rotations include the following:
- Endocrinology: Become proficient in Diabetes management including insulin pumps and dosing regimens, diabetes education, and making correct consultations to other physicians for complete patient care. Also, many patients with Thyroid issues were in need of work up and an occasional thyroid biopsy.
- Family Medicine: Learn the basics of medicine including outpatient and inpatient management, emergency medicine, and obstetrics.
- Anesthesiology: Perfect the technique of peripheral nerve blocks prior to surgery, and learn the Ins and Outs of anesthesia care in the surgical setting.
His favorite rotation so far has been Trauma Surgery, which was also his busiest, and hopes to integrate Traumatology into his practice someday. For the rest of the year Dr. Gerber will be rotating through Podiatry Surgery, Radiology, and Rheumatology.
