Did you know that April is stress awareness month? It has been held every April since 1992! Who knew? So, to make sure you are heading into this spring season with a good stress-free start, here are some tips to help you keep your stress level at a minimum.
Slow Down: There are always parties to attend, playdates for your kids, doctors appointments to be at, and the list goes on and on. If you are feeling overwhelmed and that you don’t have enough time in your day, just relax! Take the unnecessary things off your calendars and just stick with the things that really need your attention. Having some down time can help you unwind and relax.
Breath: Take a few minutes everyday to breathe deeply. Sit up straight and close your eyes, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Don’t just do this once a week, but make it a regular part of your routine. It seems small and simple, but can actually help in lowering blood pressure.
Exercise: It is so easy to make excuses not to exercise, but it is extremely important, not only to your physical health, but to your emotional health as well. Try and find 20-30 minutes in your day to exercise. It can be something as simple as a quick walk outside in the sunshine, during your lunch break at work. Or, a little yoga at night to stretch and relax your body. Daily exercise will brighten your mood, and increase your energy level. An increased energy level won’t make all those stressful things in your life go away, but it will aid in making it easier to get them done.
Laughing: Laughing out loud can actually lower the hormone cortisol, which is your body’s stress hormone. It can also boost endorphins which will help lighten your mood. So, be generous with your laughs, and find something or someone that makes you laugh everyday.
Be Grateful: Find things you are grateful for everyday. Start a gratitude journal and record 3-5 things a day that you are grateful for. Once you recognize all the good in your life it will help take out the negative from your mind and divert your thoughts away from the things that are causing you stress.
